Marriage Licenses in Hawaii

To lawfully marry in the State of Hawaii a license is required and must be obtained from an authorized marriage license agent.  When the license is issued there is no waiting period before the marriage can occur.

Important Facts:

  • Marriage applicants are not required to be US citizens or residents of the State of Hawaii.
  • Blood tests are not required.
  • Birth certificates are not required.
  • The legal age to marry for both males and females is 18 years.
  • Individuals aged 16 and 17 must provide written consent from parents, legal guardian/guardians or family court. The parents or legal guardians are not required to be residents of the State of Hawaii. Consent forms may be obtained from the marriage license agent.
  • Individuals aged 15 must provide written consent from parents, legal guardian/guardians and the written approval of a judge of the family court. The parents or legal guardians are not required to be residents of the State of Hawaii. Consent forms may be obtained from the marriage license agent.
  • Individuals must provide proof of age to the marriage license agent. Individuals aged 18 and under must present a certified copy of a birth certificate. Individuals aged 19 and over may present a valid ID or drivers license.
  • Cousins are allowed to marry as long as the blood relationship between the couple is not closer than first cousins.
  • If previously married an individual must list the date, county and state in which the marriage ended for each previous marriage.
  • Individuals must supply the full names of their parents and each parents' place of birth.

To Apply for a Marriage License:

  • The future bride and groom must appear in person and together before a marriage license agent. No proxies are allowed.
  • The couple must provide the necessary proof of age and any required consents and approvals. All documents must be obtained by individuals prior to appointment with marriage license agent.
  • The future bride and groom must complete an official marriage certificate application and file it in person with the marriage license agent. Applications may be obtained from the marriage license agent or online. The application may not be submitted to the marriage license agent by postal service or e-mail.
  • The marriage license is issued to the prospective bride and groom upon approval of the marriage license agent at time of application.
  • A fee of $60 plus a 4.167% tax is due and payable at the time of application for the marriage license with the marriage license agent.
  • The marriage license is valid throughout the State of Hawaii only.
  • The marriage license is good for thirty (30) days from its issuance including the date of issuance. After thirty (30) days the marriage license is invalid.
  • If the couple does not marry within the thirty (30) days the unused license must be returned to the address provided on envelope provided at time of application.
  • After your wedding ceremony your marriage officiant will complete the marriage license and forward it to the Hawaii Department of Health. There the certificate is registered and then returned to you by mail approximately 60 to 120 days after it is registered.
